Cobalt Supply Chain Compliance

Cobalt is a critical mineral used primarily in lithium-ion battery cathodes. Approximately 70% of global cobalt production comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) raises significant human rights concerns, including child labour. Cobalt is designated as a critical mineral by the EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan.

OECD Due Diligence

Companies sourcing cobalt from the DRC or other conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs) must conduct supply chain due diligence in accordance with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Mineral Supply Chains. The Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) provides the Cobalt Reporting Template (CRT) and conducts Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) audits of cobalt smelters and refiners.
